Apple offers a features list and screen shot for the Mac OS 8 Finder at (http://www.macos.apple.com/macos8/screenshot.html).
- Reports from the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference:
Rhapsody and Mac OS futures
Several members of the WSSG Macintosh Support Team will discuss their observations and impressions from this conference, at which Apple Computer, Inc. formally unveiled its operating system strategy following its purchase of NeXT, Inc.
In a milestone as potentially significant as the introductions of the Apple ][ and Macintosh, Apple Computer, Inc. is "betting the farm" on:
- Its next-generation operating system, Rhapsody, for the PowerPC and Intel architectures. This OS will blend the robust operating system which Apple acquired from NeXT -- which offers full preemptive multitasking, memory protection, and symmetric multiprocessing, as well as a Display PostScript imaging model --with an "advanced Mac look and feel" and such core Apple technologies as the QuickTime Media Layer. Rhapsody for PowerPC will also run Mac OS software in a "Blue Box" environment.
- The development/runtime environment, known for now as the "Yellow Box" -- implemented as a set of object libraries which sit on top of an OS -- which will allow developers to write software once, then run it under Rhapsody for PowerPC and for Intel, the Mac OS, and Windows 95 and NT.
- A revitalized Mac OS, to be enhanced over time in parallel with Rhapsody. Apple has scheduled Mac future OS releases through the year 2000, and expects this OS to have a useful life of up to 10 years.
Will Apple's strategy succeed? Come take an early look at Apple's OS directions and decide for yourself.
